We’ve heard it for years: “It’s the inside that counts. But try as we may to believe that statement, it’s easier said than done.

What defines your worth?

For many of us, one marker of “worth” is the scale—what we weigh.

About 1 in 2 Americans are on a diet at any one time to lose weight.

While a number means nothing more than the amount of gravity holding us down to this earth, it somehow has evolved to possess this odd power over our self-esteem, and other daily choices we make.

We let “that number” influence:

  • How we view ourselves
  • What we eat (or don’t eat)
  • How we feel in our tank-top or swimsuit
  • Our sense of peace
  • And so much more!

When you step on the scale and see a number, you typically experience one of four feelings—

  1. Frustrated! (“Why isn’t it budging?!”)
  2. Disappointed (“Sigh…I guess it will always be this way”);
  3. Temporarily Relieved (Phew. You’re in the clear for today…but you have to make sure that you keep it up for tomorrow)
  4. Shocked (“How can it be?!”)

To complicate matters, that number is constantly changing.

In the morning, you’re one to five pounds lighter than that evening.  If you sweat all day in the sun at the football game tailgate, you may weigh two pounds less after.  On your period? Uppsie daisy.  Stressed? That weight won’t budge—no matter how hard you try (hello cortisol)!

You will never be the same exact number guaranteed at any point in time. (Hence why the “weight worry” is EXHAUSTING)!

Listen up: A number does not define you.

If it’s hard to believe for yourself, think about it in terms of other people.

Imagine you are in a crowded place—a coffee shop, grocery store or concert. People are all around. You see them. You are aware of them. And the last thing on your mind is…what they weigh.

Unless you are an extremely judgmental individual, you probably don’t see a girl at the concert and see the number “135 pounds” stamped on her forehead; or stand next to a woman in the grocery store check out line and label her as “158 pounds;” or scroll through your friend’s latest Instagram selfies with her Tea Cup Yorkie Baxter and see “115 pounds,” before you actually laugh at the silly smile on her face.

In short: You don’t define others by what they weigh. So why do you define yourself?

You are more than a number, and although a number is a gauge of our general health and wellness, it is simply just that: a gauge.

There are far more authentic measures of health and wellness (that have absolutely nothing to do with a scale), including:

  • How you feel in your body, your skin, and your clothes
  • Your energy levels
  • Your digestion, hormone balance, and immunity
  • Your relationship with food and fitness
  • How alive your spirit and soul is within you (Joy, passion, exuberance)
  • The thoughts in your head

—All of these measures are worth far more weight (no pun intended) than one measly number on a scale.

Rule Break Project: Throw Out the Scale!

SMASH your scale today.

Nope don’t tuck it away. Hide it. Give it to your friend or significant other. Put it under the bed or in the closet. THROW IT OUT. Better yet…use a sledge hammer!

No scale in your house but you still let the number on a scale define you?

Draw a picture of a scale, and on that picture, write all the messages, to date, that you have believed when it comes to the scale.

  • “You’re so fat.”
  • “You will be perfect when you lose 5-10 lbs.”
  • “Less is more.”
  • “You’ll NEVER lose weight.”

Or better yet, find a pair of jeans, an old picture of yourself, or a picture of another girl who you’ve been wanting to be (You decide) then…Throw it out.

Today marks a new day of breaking up with the scale (or jean sizes or pictures).

By focusing on other things outside the number—like our energy levels, hormonal balance, how we feel in our own skin, the number becomes more and more what it REALLY is (gravity).
