Drink lemon water or apple cider vinegar (1 Tbsp lemon juice in 8 oz water) throughout the day. 

Keeping water flushing through in steady stream prevents bacteria from building up in your bladder and swimming up your ureters to the kidneys. Try this and other natural UTI remedies to experience relief.

Bonus:  Celery juice  is one of the best ways to help flush out bacterial infections from the bladder. It acts as a diuretic, which helps to flush out the bladder. If it’s not your fave taste wise, you can combine with other kidney-friendly juiced fruits and vegetables such as apples, pears, cucumber, carrots, parsley, lemon and ginger. You can also buy celery seed tea and use as one of the natural UTI remedies. 

One serving of watermelon juice or a serving of watermelon a day may also be used. Bonus: blend up the watermelon flesh together with the seeds to make a smoothie to help to support bladder health in full. Watermelon seeds are also known to have antibacterial activity against bladder-based bacterial infections.

Remedy #4: Take D-Mannose + Olive Leaf w/ Meals

Most bacteria are non-motile, but E. coli is the Michael Jordan of the pathogen world. Keep UTI bacteria at bay with D-Mannose like this one PLUS this one. Take 500 mg of D-mannose every 2-3 hours for 5 days

Remedy #5: Garlic or Allicin

Take 1-2 cloves minced raw garlic with every meal, swallowing the pieces with water, like pills. Take it mid-meal, so there’s food on your stomach. If you’re not feeling the garlic, you can also take Allicin like this one and try other natural UTI remedies.

Remedy #6: Cayenne Pepper

Take 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper with every meal. (If you tried it during the Emergency stage—see below— and you feel it helped. It helps wonderfully with some types of infection, and irritates others!) You can mix it into a spoonful of honey to make it palatable. If you don’t think your stomach can handle 1/4 tsp, take 1/8 tsp, and chase it with a glass of baking soda water (1/4 tsp in 8 oz water).

Remedy #7: Sip Tea

Cistus tea is magical for UTIs just like other natural UTI remedies such as cinnamon or ginger tea!

You can make your own tea from powdered cinnamon or ginger. Stir 4 tsp loose spice powder into 24 oz steaming hot water and pour the infused water off in 20 minutes, leaving the majority of the sediment behind. (All types of cinnamon other than Ceylon contain a toxin, coumarin, which is not water-soluble so it will be left behind in the tea grounds.) Drink 8 oz. 3 times a day. You can stir in a spoonful of honey, if desired, and add a bit of lemon juice to the ginger tea.

Remedy #8: Sugar, Caffeine, Gluten/Grains Cleanse

It goes without saying that sugar and processed carbohydrates can feed bacteria. For now: No sugar, caffeine or grains/wheat at all. Focus on real whole foods and lots of water to make these natural UTI remedies work well.

Remedy #10: Emergency UTI Pain Relief (Early Treatment)

  • Baking Soda in Water

Directions: Mix 1 tsp baking soda in 16 oz. water.
Baking soda raises your urine pH quickly, slowing down the UTI “pathogens” from feeding and seeding, as well as reduces UTI pain dramatically in less than an hour. Usage of baking soda as one of the natural UTI remedies is great. (UNLESS you have a staph, strep, or entero UTI, in which case NEVER drink soda water. In this case: You do need ascorbic acid Vitamin C or pure cranberry juice—only positive against a positive “staph” based UTI infection) Note: If you have high blood pressure issues, you don’t want to drink more than this one glass because of the sodium, so after the first emergency dose, drink.

  • Lemon water

Directions: Mix 1 tablespoon of lemon juice in 16 oz water
Counter-intuitively, lemon juice has the same action as baking soda for raising urine pH because lemon and lime juice are alkaline-forming inside your body. I don’t think it is as fast or effective as baking soda, but it’s better for your body as a maintenance measure while you treat your infection, and it’s better than nothing if it’s the middle of the night, you’re in pain, and you don’t have baking soda.

  • Raw Garlic

Directions: Consume 2 average-size minced cloves.
This will powerfully affect your UTI in short order, killing off pathogens and reducing your pain level. Swallow small chopped pieces with water, like pills, with some food, like toast. You should chase it with a shot of pure lemon juice, 1.5 oz. This helps you absorb the garlic, especially if you have heartburn. Yes, you read that right. If you get heartburn you need to take acid.

  • Cayenne Pepper

Directions: Consume 1/4 tsp mixed into a glass of water or a spoonful of honey.
Take with a little food, like the garlic. This has a dramatic positive effect on some gram negative infections: it kills one strain of E. coli outright. This and other natural UTI remedies have something that will greatly relieve your pain if your UTI is caused by a certain type of gram-negative pathogen. If you feel a warm tingling in your bladder about 40 minutes after taking, followed by a sharp decrease in UTI symptoms, take 1/4 tsp every 4 waking hours for 3 days, then with every meal for 2 more days. Use urine test strips to make sure they’re clear at the 5 minute mark, and then you’re done. If, however, you feel like it irritated your infection, STOP. It can go either way, depending on what kind of infection you have, there are many different kinds of natural UTI remedies that will work for you.
