What are your top fears? Mayonnaise used to freak me out…until I discovered these truths…
Food fears are very common amongst those of us who have created or lived by food rules for far too long. Mayo was at the top of mine (along with things like red meat, egg yolks, butter–and anything else with fat). Fast-forward to today and Primal Kitchen sent me a box full of their latest Primal Kitchen condiments, including their delicious avocado-oil-based mayo (my fav product of them all). Here’s how this fear has come FULL CIRCLE.

From Fear to Courage
Opening the box full of mayo, salad dressings and avocado oil made me laugh out loud.
Yes, mayo once freaked me out.The fatty condiment was nothing but “thigh jiggle” and “cellulite” in my mind—offering no nutritional value whatsoever.
Fat Makes You Fat
Just the word “fat” alone made me crawl in my skin—reminding me of warm Oscar Meyer bologna sandwiches on Iron Kids white bread in my Beauty & The Beast lunchbox and Burger King’s fried chicken hoagie sandwich I ate frequently as a kid before I learned the words “fat” and “diet.”
Mayonnaise was one of the first foods I cut out of my diet when the eating disorder took over and it was always the first foods I placed on my “absolute hate” list every time I entered inpatient recovery treatment (note: I only got to eliminate three foods, so I had to choose wisely).
While mayo wasn’t my only “fear” (there were plenty of others based on my stereotypes and judgments, labeling foods as “good” or “bad”), cutting out mayo represented the beginning of my personal achievement; The achievement that I found in my ability to diet like a professional (i.e. willpower).
If I was to ever let MAYO touch my lips again, the fears of losing control and losing the daily gold stars I earned through restriction were unbearable.
Enter: REAL recovery—and a new mindset.
How do you get over a fear?
You face it.
However a step often missed before facing a fear is…Challenge it. You challenge WHY it became a fear in the first place.
I did A LOT of facing fears in recovery—
- Eating foods “challenge” foods that I had avoided for more than a decade (even a Twinkie challenge);
- Going without 7 hours of workouts each day;
- Nourishing my body in spite of not training those 7 hours;
- Facing myself in the mirror every day and choosing to love myself in the process
However, UNTIL I really challenged each fear, I continued to just go through the motions of recovery: trying to “fake it until I made it” (i.e. Trying to go a day without chronic cardio for others’ requests, ordering pizza because I “should” or just eat what I was forced to eat in treatment so that I could earn my gold stars).
Real courage and NO fear really came when I gained clarity behind why each fear developed in the first place and then countered each fear (or irrational belief) with a NEW TRUTH and affirmation.
(Translation? Call B.S. on the fears that have been holding you back).
Whether you fear public speaking…being alone…speaking your mind…asking for a raise…other’s thoughts and opinions about you…or eating fat (even healthy fat)…
UNTIL you counter those fears with a NEW belief, mindset and truth…then they will continue to be fears (regardless of how much you take action against them).
In the case of eating mayo, I had to replace my fear of “getting fat” with NEW TRUTHS, including:
- My worth is not found in what I look like, the size of my waist, or what I put in my mouth.
- Nourishing my body with a balance of foods is NOT a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength (self-care)
- Eating fat does NOT make you fat.
(GASP!)
Ya, ya, ya you’ve heard that before in our mainstream health talk, but here is the truth WHY…
6 Reasons Why Fat is Really, Really Good for You
1. Fat burns fat. Healthy fats boost metabolic processes—including fat burning. Your cortisol levels need fat to remain balanced (when we aren’t getting enough fat, our cortisol—stress hormones—gets out of whack, elevating cortisol, holding onto stubborn body fat and leaving us burning a candle at both ends—never able to ‘catch up’ or feel fully energized or rested)
2. Aids in digestion. Fat lubricates your intestinal and digestive system to help things flow smoothly and not ferment in our guts for too long.
3. Enhances brain function. Your brain is over 60% fat itself—and it needs fat to think straight and operate at its peak.
4. Healthy fat—especially saturated fats, like coconut oil, ghee, egg yolks, animal meats and butter—prevents inflammation from building in your body.
5. It helps us ABSORB all the vitamins and minerals from our food.
6. It makes everything taste better.
If you fear fat like I did at one time, consider CHALLENGING THAT FEAR with one or all of these facts—new beliefs. (Changes in our habits and beliefs ALL start in the mind).
Some healthy fats to include in your diet (preferably every meal)?

And, of course, Primal Kitchen mayo.
Fat does a body good.
